Spring break is an annual week-long rest from classes for students usually in the months of March or April. It gives students the opportunity to take a break before the end of the second semester and final exams.

For University of Arkansas students, spring break occurred from March 18 to 22. Many students use this break to travel all over the world, rest and connect with family and friends before returning to class.

Audrey Shellhammer, a freshman mathematics major from Springdale, said she is looking forward to spending her spring break with a friend. She is going to visit her friend’s hometown, which is a small town in southern Illinois that is close to St. Louis.

“I met a girl at the beginning of the semester, and we’ve become pretty good friends,” Shellhammer said. “I’m actually going with her to her hometown, and she’s going to show me around.”

Shellhammer said she is most excited to visit a bookstore that her friend told her about. She said she is looking forward to meeting some of her friend’s friends that she has talked to over the phone but never met in person.

Shellhammer describes spring break as a time where students can “be ourselves.” She said her ideal spring break would be taking time to read, rest, bake and cook. She also expressed interest in traveling internationally, specifically to Ireland or Italy for a future spring break.

She said she is ready to get some more rest over the break.

“I think I’ll feel a little bit more refreshed, but I think that first week is going to be hard coming back,” Shellhammer said. “I’ll have a little more sleep in my system.”

Shellhammer said she appreciates having a break during the second semester. “For first semester, we have fall break and Thanksgiving, so it’s nice to have a break during second semester.”
